The $90 billion fortune nobody can find

The thesis

A fortune worth about $90 billion sits in plain sight. Anyone can look at it. Nobody has touched it in more than 15 years. And nobody knows who owns it.

How the fortune was made

Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonymous creator of bitcoin. In the network's earliest days, when almost nobody else was running it, the creator mined the coins that make up this fortune. Blockchain analysts, including Arkham, attribute about 1.1 million bitcoin to those early wallets.

What it is worth

At mid-October 2026 prices, that's roughly $90 billion, enough to rank among the largest fortunes on earth. But it's a number on paper. Bitcoin's price changes daily, and a stash this size could never be sold all at once without moving the market it's priced in.

The vanishing

The creator stopped communicating years ago, and the coins have sat untouched for more than 15 years. Every one of them is visible on bitcoin's public ledger. None of them has moved.

The suspects

Over the years, several people have been named as the possible Satoshi. In April 2026, a New York Times report pointed to British cryptographer Adam Back, who denied it. Everyone named so far has either denied it or been ruled out by a court. Proving it would take one thing nobody has done: moving or signing with the original coins.

The audit and the verdict

The episode works through four findings, including a proposal from bitcoin's own developers, BIP-361, that could freeze these coins before quantum computers are able to crack the old wallets. Jump to the findings at 2:59 or straight to the verdict at 5:00.
